Light up a Life

Light up a Life

One of the best features of the Hitchin Christmas lights is the beautiful blue-white lit tree in the grounds of St Mary’s Church in the town centre.

The tree commemorates friends, relatives or other loved ones who have died, at the time of year when we probably miss them most.

The Light-up-a-life project is led by Chris Holmes and the Youth Services team.  The event raises funds for the two local Hospices – Garden House in Letchworth and Keech Cottage in Luton, and the Marie Curie Cancer Care.

A special service is held at St Mary’s church early in December when the lights are first turned on.  It attracts hundreds of attendees, many who stay on afterwards to sit and reflect in the historic setting and enjoy a glass of gluwien with friends and family

Since its inception in 2011 the event has attracted donations in excess of £3k to these charities and is now a permanent part of the Christmas Calendar

In 2014 the team are selling a special Christmas Card featuring the Tree and St Mary’s Church with all proceeds going to the charities. Here is a sneak preview:
